Moving to Mill Valley from San Francisco comes with a lot of decisions. But if you have kids, one question tends to rise above the rest: which neighborhood puts my child in the best school?
It is a fair question, and the answer is more nuanced than most people expect. Mill Valley is not a single community. It is a patchwork of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own personality, price range, and elementary school. In many cases, the school your child attends comes down to which side of a street your house is on.
I have lived and worked here for years. What follows is not a summary of data points pulled from a website. It is what I actually know from being part of this community.
One thing before you read on: School boundaries shift, and individual addresses matter more than neighborhood names. Always verify your specific address with the Mill Valley Elementary School District before investing in real estate in California.
Registration Window is usually December-January.
School placement at schools is based on:
- Siblings of currently enrolled students residing in the District are considered residents of the sibling’s school and will be enrolled in that school if they wish and if there is space. The currently enrolled sibling must be in attendance at the school when the new enrollee enters the school.
- Facility capacity and class size.
- Proximity of residence to the school of choice.
- Identified special education and program needs.
- Balance of class size across the District.
For placement purposes, parents are asked to rank their preferences (1st to 5th) for each of our five elementary schools. Requests that do not indicate a ranked preference for each elementary school may be discarded.
Downtown Mill Valley: Old Mill Elementary (K-5)
There is something about downtown Mill Valley that surprises people when they first arrive. For a town this close to San Francisco, it feels genuinely unhurried. Depot Plaza draws people together in a way that most Bay Area suburbs simply do not. Live music on Fridays, trivia nights on Mondays, neighbors and families who stop to talk rather than rush past.
The cultural life here punches well above its weight:
- The Mill Valley Film Festival has been a fixture since 1977 and remains one of the most respected in the country
- Sweetwater Music Hall consistently brings in great live acts
- The First Tuesday ArtWalk rotates Bay Area artists into local businesses every month
- Robin Williams, who lived in Mill Valley, used to drop in unannounced at Tuesday Night Comedy at the Throckmorton Theater
Old Mill Elementary sits at the top of nearly every public school ranking in Marin County and California. For families where walkability and community feel matter as much as academics, downtown Mill Valley is hard to beat.
Sycamore Park: Park Elementary (K-5)
Sycamore Park does not try to compete with downtown Mill Valley. It does not need to. The neighborhood has its own rhythm, its own loyal residents, and a community identity that has been built over decades rather than marketed into existence.
The annual Halloween celebration draws people from across Marin every year. It has become the kind of tradition that families plan around. Boyle Park is the other anchor of daily life here:
- Public tennis courts with an active program
- A dog community that has built real friendships among neighbors
- Baseball fields and a children’s park
- A go-to spot for birthday parties and weekend afternoons
Park Elementary consistently ranks among the best public schools in California. Families who land here tend to stay, and that says something.
Alto and Scott Valley: Edna Maguire Elementary (K-5)
Boundary note: Alto and Scott Valley primarily feed Edna Maguire. Parts of Homestead Valley also fall into this zone, depending on your exact address. Confirm before you make an offer.
This part of Mill Valley gets overlooked, and that is a mistake. It is flatter and sunnier than the canyon neighborhoods. Streets are more walkable. Access to the highway and everyday errands is easier. And for families coming from San Francisco who are used to getting around without a car, the bike path here is one its best features.
That path connects you to:
- Edna Maguire Elementary
- Mill Valley Middle School
- Tamalpais High School
- The community center
All without touching a car. When school traffic backs up on the other side of town, this neighborhood stays calm.
The school itself had a full 36 million dollar rebuild in 2014. It still feels new. Academic scores sit well above state averages. And the free-range horses grazing on the hill behind the neighborhood are one of those details that remind you why people love living in Marin.
Strawberry: Strawberry Point Elementary (K-5)
Strawberry often gets described as the quieter, more affordable alternative to downtown Mill Valley, and that is accurate as far as it goes. But it undersells what the neighborhood actually is.
It sits on a peninsula between Mill Valley and Tiburon, with bay views, gorgeous wetlands, and easy Highway 101 access. The Strawberry Community Center is one of the best neighborhood amenities in all of Marin:
- Swimming pool
- Tennis and pickleball courts
- Baseball and childcare programs
- All in one place, walking distance from most homes
For day to day life, the Safeway covers the basics. Archrival Sports is a beloved family-owned shoe store. Harmony Restaurant is the dim sum spot locals keep to themselves. And Strawberry Point Elementary ranks in the top 5% of all California schools, which is not a small thing.
If you want the Mill Valley school district at a slightly more accessible price point, Strawberry deserves a serious look.
Tamalpais Valley and Homestead Valley: Tam Valley Elementary (K-5)
Boundary note: Tamalpais Valley feeds Tam Valley Elementary. Homestead Valley splits between Tam Valley and Edna Maguire depending on where exactly you are. Verify your address with the district.
Tam Valley has the highest academic scores in the entire Mill Valley Elementary District. That fact alone gets people’s attention. But the neighborhood is more than its test scores.
It sits near Highway 1, with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area practically in the backyard. World class hiking trails begin where the streets end. The school campus reflects this, with a garden, nature walks, and science and music programs woven into the school day.
A few honest things worth knowing:
- Summer fog rolls in here more than anywhere else in Mill Valley. Some people love it. Some do not. Find out which type you are before you fall in love with a house.
- Hookfish and Pizza Hacker are the neighborhood spots, and Pizza Hacker brings in live music worth showing up for
- Proof Lab Surf Shop is a personal favorite for clothes and gifts
Homestead Valley has its own identity within this area. Goat Hill is a landmark locals genuinely love, and the annual Homestead Valley Music Festival is the kind of community event that makes you feel like you belong somewhere. The Homestead community center with a pool, park, and renovated facility anchors to community together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all Mill Valley elementary schools actually good?
Yes. Every school in the Mill Valley Elementary School District carries a Niche grade of A or higher, and the district as a whole ranks in the top 5% of California public schools. The better question is not which school is best. It is the neighborhood that fits the way your family actually lives.
Which neighborhood is most affordable for families?
Tamalpais Valley tends to be the most accessible entry point while still delivering top-ranked schools. Strawberry offers slightly lower prices than downtown. Alto and Scott Valley sit below the premium of the hillside canyon neighborhoods and offer practical advantages that families with young children genuinely appreciate.
Can kids walk or bike to school here?
In most of Mill Valley, not easily. But the Alto and Scott Valley area feeding Edna Maguire is a real exception. The dedicated bike path connecting homes to multiple schools and the community center is something you rarely find in Marin. For families used to car-free living in San Francisco, this is a meaningful quality of life difference.
What is the commute to San Francisco like?
It varies. Downtown Mill Valley and Sycamore Park sit close to the highway and typically run 25 to 35 minutes without traffic. Strawberry has excellent 101 access as well. Tamalpais Valley connects easily to Highway 1. That said, Mill Valley traffic can pile up badly when school lets out or when there is an incident on 101. The Alto and Scott Valley neighborhoods tend to sidestep a lot of that.
How do I confirm which school my child will attend?
You should check your specific address with the Mill Valley Elementary School District directly, Phone 415-389-7700. Neighborhood names are not reliable guides. Some streets in Homestead Valley, for example, are split between two different schools depending on which side of the street the house sits on. Do this before you make an offer, not after.
Is Strawberry actually part of Mill Valley?
Technically, Strawberry is an unincorporated community with a Mill Valley mailing address. It is served by the Mill Valley Elementary School District through Strawberry Point Elementary. It has a quieter, more suburban feel than downtown Mill Valley, but it shares the same school district and is a strong choice for families who want that without paying downtown prices.
